As a Michigan engagement photographer, I’ve captured love stories in many beautiful places, but this evening on Lake Michigan was something truly special. The soft light, gentle sway of the sailboat, and Jack and Kendra’s connection made the session feel dreamlike.
Jack and Kendra are both pilots, which perfectly captures their adventurous hearts and excitement for life. Jack proposed in Florida, creating the perfect beginning to their story. A surprise sailboat ride and celebration with close family made the moment even more meaningful. Since Kendra has always loved sailboats, she knew she wanted to include one for their engagement photos. The beauty of the harbor and the calm of Lake Michigan created the perfect atmosphere for their South Haven engagement session.
We began their session on the beach just as the light started to turn golden, kicking off their shoes and walking barefoot along the water’s edge. Kendra wore a sleeveless steel-blue dress that fit her beautifully, and Jack complemented her perfectly in a taupe shirt and shorts. The tones of their clothing worked beautifully with the water and sky, giving each image a classic and serene feel. The candid photos from this part of the session show who they are as a couple. Playful, relaxed, and completely in love.
South Haven’s beaches offer a mix of open sand and small wooded areas, providing a variety of beautiful backdrops for portraits. We explored a section where a few bare trees had fallen along the shore, creating natural frames and interesting textures in the images. Jack and Kendra moved easily through the scene, laughing and enjoying the setting. It allowed me to capture candid moments that felt natural.
As the sun lowered, Jack and Kendra moved closer to the water and let the waves lap at their feet. Their energy was light and carefree, creating some of my favorite shots of the session, marked by laughter and spontaneous moments that felt effortless. To celebrate, they popped open a bottle of champagne, sending a sparkling spray into the air. It was such a joyful, celebratory moment that perfectly reflected their adventurous spirits.
After finishing on the beach, it was time for the highlight of the session, the sailboat. Jack helped Kendra carefully onto the boat, a sweet and thoughtful gesture that felt completely natural. Kendra had changed into a fitted strapless white dress that photographed beautifully against the water, and Jack wore a steel-blue shirt with khaki shorts. Their outfits complemented the water and the crisp white sail, creating images that felt effortlessly elegant. Once we were out on the lake, the gentle movement of the boat and the calm water provided a serene and romantic setting for the rest of the session.
Once we were out on the water, the setting sun painted the sky in shades of gold and rose. Jack and Kendra stood together at the bow, the light reflecting off the waves around them. As the evening progressed, the mood shifted to something quiet and intimate. They sat together on the deck, laughing softly, sharing little glances that said everything. I captured some of my favorite images as the sun slipped lower. Jack kissed Kendra’s shoulder, her hair glowing, and their foreheads touched as they smiled.

It’s personal and romantic, with an air of freedom that perfectly suits couples who love to explore together.
As the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, the lake grew still and quiet, bringing our time to a peaceful close. Jack and Kendra’s South Haven engagement session was everything they dreamed of. It was an honor to photograph them in a place that reflected so much of who they are.
